ChatGPT's debut and related chips benefit, but be careful of potential worries
At the beginning of the Spring Festival in 2023, the concept of ChatGPT chat robot continued to heat up, and internet giants such as Microsoft, Google, and Baidu competed to layout, driving the attention of related chips to increase, and triggering widespread discussions in the industry.
Internet giants are betting on ChatGPT

According to data, ChatGPT is a brand new chat robot model developed by OpenAI, an artificial intelligence research laboratory in the United States, in November 2022. The model was launched only two months ago and achieved a monthly life of over 100 million, becoming the fastest-growing consumer application in history.

Compared with other chat robots, ChatGPT not only enables dialogue and interaction through learning and understanding human language, but also assists humans in completing tasks such as writing emails, writing papers, formulating plans, creating poetry, and typing code. Its intelligence level and user experience are further improved.

In early February of this year, OpenAI announced the launch of a paid subscription version of ChatGPT Plus, priced at $20 per month. The industry estimates that there are over 1 billion potential users worldwide who can use ChatGPT. If this pricing model is recognized, ChatGPT is expected to bring in a market size of over 200 billion US dollars.

The value of ChatGPT is not only here, but in the future, ChatGPT is also expected to drive the takeoff of multiple fields such as chips, HPC, and cloud computing. Bill Gates, the founder of Microsoft, commented that the emergence of ChatGPT, an AI technology, is no less historic than the birth of the Internet and personal computers.

Attracted by the promising prospects of ChatGPT, internet giants are betting one after another.

In fact, as early as 2019, Microsoft invested $1 billion in OpenAI to collaborate on the development of "General Artificial Intelligence", while also obtaining permission to commercialize some of OpenAI's technologies. In January of this year, Microsoft announced that it would invest billions of dollars in OpenAI for several years. In February, Microsoft announced the launch of the latest versions of artificial intelligence search engines Bing (Bing) and Edge browser supported by ChatGPT.

The booming development of ChatGPT has also prompted two internet giants, Google and Baidu, to take action. On February 6th this year, Google announced the launch of the chat robot "Bard", competing with the recently popular Microsoft company ChatGPT in the field of generative artificial intelligence. On February 7, Baidu announced that the name of the new project of the big model was "ERNIE Bot", and the English name was "ERNIE Bot". It has the ability of deep semantic understanding and generation across modules and languages.

In addition, according to many domestic media reports, following the exposure of Baidu's ChatGPT project "ERNIE Bot", Alibaba also confirmed that its ChatGPT products have been under research and development and are currently in the internal testing stage.
ChatGPT is expected to contribute to the development of high-performance GPUs and others

As a product of the deep development of artificial intelligence to a certain stage, ChatGPT has a high demand for chip computing power, and products such as high-performance GPUs are expected to benefit from it.

The industry points out that the underlying computing power chips for natural language AI applications are mainly high-performance GPUs, with Nvidia occupying the main market among these chips. It is reported that ChatGPT has imported at least 10000 Nvidia high-end GPUs. Citibank analysis suggests that ChatGPT may generate sales of $3 billion to $11 billion for Nvidia in the next 12 months.

AMD, another major chip manufacturer, showcased the next generation APU product for data centers, Instact MI300, at this year's CES, with plans to launch it in the second half of the year. The Instinct MI300 adopts a chiplet design with 13 small chips and a total of 146 billion transistors, surpassing Intel's Ponte Vecchio with 100 billion transistors and becoming AMD's largest chip in production. AMD stated that the Instinct MI300 can reduce the training time of ultra large AI models such as ChatGPT and DALL-E from a few months to a few weeks, thereby saving millions of dollars in electricity.

With the continuous popularity of the ChatGPT concept, domestic AI chip manufacturers are also expected to benefit. In addition, due to ChatGPT's reliance on a large amount of computing power (chips) to support its training and deployment, ChatGPT still requires high computing power server support when applied, which is expected to indirectly drive the development of server memory.
Is ChatGPT really perfect?

While ChatGPT is highly sought after, there are also voices of skepticism in the industry. For example, although the functionality of ChatGPT is eye-catching, as a newly launched product, there are still some issues where the response is inaccurate and untrue, and its practicality needs to be further strengthened.

According to the latest media report, Google's artificial intelligence chat robot Bard made a factual error in a demonstration video. When asked about the new discovery of the James Webb Space Telescope, Bard said that the telescope had taken the first pictures of extrasolar planets, but the American astronauts said that these pictures were actually taken by another telescope.

For example, the clich é d threat theory of artificial intelligence. With the continuous improvement of ChatGPT technology, will future brainworkers (engineers, news editors, translators, copywriters, etc.) be replaced?

Finally, there is the issue of data security. When employees use ChatGPT to assist in work, the risk of trade secret leakage also increases. Is ChatGPT compliant and legal in obtaining data? Whether using data for re creation violates relevant copyright... These are all issues that need to be addressed in the development process of ChatGPT.
